Like it or not, there are fewer and fewer fabric stores in Canadian towns and cities, so whether you have a special project in mind or you just want to keep your stash from dwindling, it's a good idea to have one or two (or a few dozen) online fabric stores in mind for shopping. Some of these shops also carry specialty items, things you just can't find at a lot of brick-and-mortar fabric stores (like Kraft-tex® or organic hemp). Sure, you can't pet the fabric, but hard times call for tough measures.
I've put together this HUMONGOUS list (*124* at last count) of Canadian online fabric stores, and as of the day I'm posting, they're all active and doing business. If you're visiting this page sometime in the future and you notice a dead link or a closed shop, please email me and let me know so that I can keep the list up-to-date. I'm arranging them geographically so that if some of you prefer to use the "pick up locally" option, you can easily see who's local to you. Those that are local to me (Kitchener-Waterloo area) are listed at the top.
One thing to note - there were so many shops that cater to quilting that at some point I just stopped adding them. But if you have a favourite and it isn't listed, by all means send me a message and let me know about it.
Looking for something in particular (like minky or vinyl?) Then enter CTRL+F and type in the word you're looking for. If it's mentioned on this page, it will be highlighted.
ONTARIO – LOCAL TO KITCHENER/WATERLOO AREA (10)
REST OF ONTARIO (34)
BRITISH COLUMBIA (27)
NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR (1)
NOVA SCOTIA (4)
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND (1)
YUKON TERRITORY (1)
CANADA - PROVINCE NOT DISCLOSED (3)
Don't forget to bookmark this page for your reference, and by all means leave me a comment if you know of a good shop I don't have on the list (or if you see a dead link).
Since this is my very first blog post here, I guess I should explain who I am and what I'm doing.
My name is Dayna, and I own this brand new company...which is currently without a physical location. I'm working hard to remedy that, by the way. I am married (he's husband 2.5...long story), and my youngest daughter also lives with us here in Kitchener, Ontario. We have two cats--one is a little mean and the other is a good bit crazy. I do sometimes feel like Dorothy (hence, that picture above), because I love Canada, but I'm from down south and often get that "I'm not in Kansas anymore" feeling. But enough about me, let's get down to what's really important.
First I thought I would begin by explaining that while Tinker TradeSpaces (or "TTS" for short) is definitely focused on fabric arts/sewing, I fully intend to embrace many other forms of craft in this space. I'm not ruling out anything at this point unless it is incompatible with sewing. Things like pottery, woodworking, metalworking, etc. probably won't work here, but I hope to help introduce people to many types of crafting, whether new and trendy or traditional and at risk of being lost.
I am building a sewing/crafting studio, equipped with machines, a big height-adjustable table, a professional steam iron station, a pinnable wall, and as much other cool crafty stuff as I can stuff into the space I start in. Space and/or equipment can be used by the hour or in bigger chunks of time (at a better value), and if space allows, we will have one or more secure, private rooms that can be used on a longer-term basis--a great option if you've been wanting to do a really large project and/or need a place to use your larger equipment. There will of course be coffee and tea. Eventually I want this to be an organized but comfortable, spacious place that anyone can come to sew or craft, or learn how to do any number of things.
And finally, it's really important to me that I make TTS as accessible as possible. Depending on the location I find, that may be a work-in-progress, but rest assured I am making that a priority. Whether you have mobility issues, low vision, hearing loss, or even language differences, it is a major goal of mine to reduce as many barriers as possible and make TTS a place where everyone comes to connect with their creativity--and with each other.
Please feel free to share any thoughts or suggestions about my project here or if you prefer, send me an email, and you can also follow us on social media (links below).
I am excited to meet all of you, and hope to see you soon at my new studio!
